Just a thought. If we were able to accept these facts, what sort of person would we be? Would we be more knowledgeable of a subject, with a more healthy and expansive way of understanding it? Would we be more creative and courageous? Would we have a renewed sense of wonder about the world and what we’re capable of creating? When we look back over the course Find Out More human existence as a species, it seems we would be well advised to strive for the latter. Yet science is often criticized, almost universally because it’s too much heavy scientific knowledge, overwhelming to the individual with such a great burden of knowledge. But what’s so wrong with this being the case when so many other human pursuits are riddled with such shortcomings? The very epitome of this critical thinking can be seen in the work of Carl Sagan, who would often lament being the sort of person who had too much knowledge. “I have so much to say,” he’d often proclaim and would follow up explaining his motivations and emotions, something he referred to more as a ‘philosophy of science.’ It’s a lot like a writer feeling more like writing a novel than an essay. If you were lucky enough to meet people who are very capable of thinking critically about various topics– from political issues to physical theories, philosophical thoughts on our mortality to scientific realities– do one thing, listen to them. Their opinions often turn out to have aDid you know the largest machine in the world? How about the largest ship in the world? If you guessed the size of the Titanic and the Leviathan, you probably know someone who went to our May 11 exhibition at the Science Museum Annex. You would have been correct. We weren’t on a cruise – we have been on a land vessel. Our ship – just like the “Titanic’s” – is more than 80 metres long, has 21,000 tonnes of displacement, 12 metres of breadth and its interior facilities cover 20,000 square metres of space. At its widest, the Leviathan just gets marginally smaller than the Titanic so it is certainly a sizable visitor attraction and it is open every day! But we have a story to tell. Our ship – that is the Seaspan (previously known as SS Kyujo Maru) – was built for carrying 6,000 tonnes of coal in western Japan in the 1960s. It wasn’t just the largest coal ship in the world – it was the largest coal vessel to be built up to that time. The Seaspan wasn’t just any ship building project but it was the largest shipbuilding project in the world. At the time, it was the largest ship built in the western hemisphere. Construction lasted three years from 1963 to 1966 but it was the largest concrete structure in the world at the time. No fewer than 15,000 people and 3,000 trucks were working on this six-acre site, working seven hours and 20 minutes a day. The Seaspan was the first ship to be built entirely out of concrete in the western hemisphere.
