## Exponents are the power of a number

In mathematics, exponents are the small numbers positioned at the up-right of the base number. They represent the repeated multiplication of a base number.

These small numbers can be numbers, constants and even variables. Whenever they are used to express a large number, the process is called as raising to power.

The symbols that are used for representing the exponents of a base number are or carrot.

In the table below, xn is written as “x to the power of n” (or) “x raised to n”. Using these powers makes it easy to write the product of a number.

### Exponents are the number’s quotient

When we use exponents, we are expressing large numbers in terms of powers. For example, 5 multiplied 3 times can be expressed as 83 because we’re using 3 as the exponent and 5.

In a similar way, when we use an exponential function, we’re using a big number on the bottom and a small one in the upper right-hand corner. The bigger number is called the base, and the smaller number is called the exponent.

The exponent is represented with a symbol (), which looks like a carrot. It’s important to remember that we are always raising the base to the exponent when we use this method of expressing large numbers in terms of powers.

There are six rules we need to follow when working with exponents. These rules are the 0 rule, the 1 rule, the power rule for exponents, the negative exponent rule, the product rule, and the quotient rule. These rules are crucial for understanding the order of operations in maths and simplifying and solving problems with exponents.

### Exponents are the number’s root

The exponent of a number tells us how many times to multiply it by itself. This is similar to the way that a multiplication of two numbers equals the sum of those numbers.

But the base of an exponent is a different number. The base of a number is also called the root.

The square root is the number that, when multiplied by itself, gives the original number. You can also find roots like the cube root, fourth root, fifth root, and so on.
